Announcement of the Austrian Society for Surgical Research PhD Award 2025
To promote young scientists in surgical research in Austria, the ÖGChF is announcing the Austrian Society for Surgical Research PhD Award 2025. This prize will be awarded to the best scientific work in a PhD program in the field of surgical research at an Austrian institution.
The prize money is €2,000.
Conditions of participation:
- The submitted work should be related to surgical research and its associated fields and be of a basic scientific or translational nature.
- The submitter must be the first author of the submitted work. It must have been produced as part of a PhD or doctoral program at an Austrian university or in cooperation with such a university. Joint submissions are possible, in which case the prize money will be divided equally among the authors named in the title.
- The author of the submitted work must be a member of the Austrian Society for Surgical Research. An application for membership must be submitted at the latest when the award is submitted.
- The submitted work must be an original work published in international journals or confirmed for publication by the publisher.
- The submitted work (date of online publication) and the completion of the PhD program must not be older than 2 years. The work may only be submitted for the PhD award of the Austrian Society for Surgical Research. It is not permitted to submit the same work for awards from other institutions, nor is it possible to resubmit it in the following year.
- Submissions must be made electronically via email by January 31, 2026, to office@chirfor.at (single PDF).
- The following documents must be included:
– Cover letter with a brief description of the work, its relevance to surgery, and the scientific environment (max. 1 page for the Society’s public relations work)
– Curriculum vitae including photo and list of publications
– Scientific work/publication as a PDF
– PhD thesis as a PDF
- The submitted works will be reviewed by the Society’s Executive Board and at least two independent reviewers.
- The works will be evaluated according to three categories: scientific novelty, relevance, and execution of the research.
- If none of the works are deemed worthy of the award by the judges, the prize will not be awarded in the year in question.
- If the judges award first place to several works, the money will be divided between them.
- The award will be presented at the Austrian Surgeons‘ Congress.
- Board members, department heads, and chief physicians are excluded from applying insofar as they may appear as co-authors but may not be considered for the distribution of the prize money.
- There is no legal claim to the award and the prize money. The award and prize money must be returned in the event of scientific misconduct (in accordance with Good Scientific Practice).
